Writing Reflection

In humanities, we needed to read two books which are called 'The Alchemist' and 'Julius Caesar'. Also based on these books, we should write the essays about the main characters. We had to get information and quotations from the book.

Ideas and content helped my essay to focused on the topic and showed clear reasons for the ideas. The Alchemist essay, I got lots of ideas from the book "The Alchemist'. I wrote about the main character, Santiago. “I can always go back to being a shepherd, the boy thought. I learned how to care for sheep, and I haven’t forgotten how that’s done. But maybe I’ll never have another chance to get to the Pyramids in Egypt.” Using this quotation, I said Santiago was very determined and I also can find his determination from the quotation. But when I explained why he was determined, I added some confusion. If I read my essay again, I can notice that Santiago might be undetermined. It would make reader confused. On the other hand, my Julius Caesar essay was better than the Alchemist one. I wrote about Brutus's patriotism and honor. I clearly gave the reasons why I thought Brutus was honorable and patriotic. But I repeated some reasons again and again. To improve writing essay, I should look for the essay for several times, and get check by teachers or other students.

My organization for Alchemist essay was quiet messy. I started with good quotations, but the topic sentences were not really clear. In the Alchemist essay, I used details over and over again, so it made more confusing. Julius Caesar essay was fairly better than the Alchemist. I think the topic sentences were improved than the alchemist even though there were grammar mistakes. Julius Caesar essay was organized in order.

There are lots of growth between the two essays. It shows how much I improved in my writing skills. The Alchemist essay wasn't well-organized and I did not really use descriptive words to describe the situation, but in Julius Caesar essay, the quotes that I chose for the evidence fitted the topic. I also had less grammar mistakes in my Julius Caesar essay than the Alchemist essay. I had improved on writing conclusion that summarize my ideas.

SLR that represents my two essay is reason critically and communicate effectively. I needed to have explanation for the quotations. I communicated with friends and we checked each others' works. We gave opinions and my humanities support teacher also helped me to correct the essays.

Hum Collage

Communicate effectively: My collage shows how the lost boys were hard and painful because of the Sudanese war and how much they are lonely after migrated to the USA.

Think Creatively: When I make the collage, I use creative thinking to make it more interesting. I place a refugee on a shape of the USA to show that he is alone. Also I put the pictures in order to reminds their life to people. I use computer computer techniques to make video unique.

Reason Critically: Before I put the refugee camp picture in my collage, first I put the tank to show a war. It gives why the refugees went to Kenya as well. I place a genocide picture to give the refugees' families were mostly killed by genocide.

Live ethically: I think my six-word memoir and the collage demonstrate empathy of the lost boys. I put pictures that I much they suffered from war.

Julius Caesar Essay

Julius Caesar Essay

“If there be any assembly, any dear friend of Caesar’s, to him I say that Brutus’ love to Caesar was no less than his. If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” On seeing quotation, you can realize Brutus loved Caesar as much as Romans loved him. But Brutus killed Caesar, because of Rome. Brutus thought Caesar would be dangerous for Rome and it was better to kill Caesar. Brutus loves his country more than Caesar, it means he is patriotic and Brutus believes himself as an honorable man in Caesar’s death.
Brutus doesn’t seem honorable? Then you might be wrong. Brutus was described an honorable man before he joined to the conspirators and also after he joined to them “O, he sits high in all the people’s heart: And that which would appear offence in us His countenance, like richest alchemy, Will change virtue and to worthiness.” This quotation is spoken when the conspirators talked whether take Brutus into their side or not. Brutus was really famous as an honorable man to Romans. Therefore the conspirators thought when they killed Caesar with Brutus; it would not seem, as a murder and it would become right and virtuous. It made the conspirators want to take Brutus into their side. Also the conspirators started to keep their mind constantly to kill Caesar, because they believed strongly that Romans wouldn’t seem as a murder, because of Brutus’ honor. It shows how Brutus was honorable before he joined to the conspirators. “No, not an oath. If not the face of men, The sufferance of our souls, the time’s abuse-If these be motives weak, break off betimes, And every man hence to his idle bed” After he joined to the conspirators, he was also showed as honorable. There is a word oath in the quote and people have an oath to swear what they are doing is not a murder. If Brutus and conspirators didn’t do an oath, it means killing Caesar is not a murder and it is right thing to do. It gives evidence that Caesar’s assassination and Brutus is honorable. Brutus is described himself as an honorable man in Julius Caesar and I agree it. He was famous with his honor in the public.
Brutus’s main motivation is patriotic. Caesar’s death also shows Brutus’ patriotism. He killed Caesar, because of Rome. He thought if Caesar were alive, it would affect Rome bProxy-Connection: keep-alive

ly. Therefore Brutus joined to the conspirators and planned to kill Caesar even though he was Caesar’ friend. “Let’s kill him boldly, but not wrathfully; Let’s carve him as a dish fit for the gods” You can see it as a respect for Caesar, but it shows patriotism as well. Brutus slew Caesar for gods to affect Rome in good way. “It must be by his death; and for my part, I know no personal cause to spurn at him, But for the general.” It means Brutus killed Caesar with no personal reason. It means, Brutus didn’t kill Caesar because he didn’t like Caesar or jealous his power It was solely for the welfare of the people. Caesar’s death is described to affect Romans and Rome in good way as well as the first quotation. Brutus and the conspirators killed Caesar for Rome and Romans to be happy. Brutus thought that if Caesar got the crown, it would alter his nature. Slaying Caesar for showing Brutus’s patriotism might be wrong, however his patriotism shows reality.
Brutus is patriotic and honorable enough to think that Caesar’s death was right thing to do. His honor and patriotism made Brutus to kill Caesar, because Caesar was dangerous to Rome if he got the crown. I think Brutus achieved actual goal, which was to kill Caesar. But he didn’t really show his honor and patriotism to the public after he slew Caesar. When he spoke in front of crowds, he didn’t really tell them why Caesar was ambitious and about his own patriotism. Therefore Caesar’s death would seem as a murder to the citizens. I believe his goal was pretty worthy. I also respect that Brutus killed Caesar, because of his country. I swear Brutus was a patriotic and honorable man for Rome and Romans.

Lost boys of Sudan

One of Dinka boy, who was named Peter, was chosen to migrate to Kansas, America. Peter was born in Sudan; nevertheless he ran away to Kenya, because of civil war, one that raged for over 20 years. When Peter migrated to Kansas, he had many difficulties. Actually Peter exceeded the age of going to the high school. But he didn’t registrant when he was born, so he made a new one in America as 17 years old and he could go the high school. Americans thought that Peter wouldn’t be smart. When a girl interviewed Peter, she described Peter as a refugee. It was a stereotype and it could make Peter sad. He weren’t really taken care of. Peter was alone. He could not find many refugees at there. Peter was satisfied to take the education, but Peter was not good at English and other subjects. Therefore he had hard time to follow the classes. Even though he liked basketball and good at it, it was tough to follow all the courses as Americans did.

America and Kenya were really different, therefore Peter had culture shock with education and artificial friendship. When he went to the USA, he started to learn many things, nevertheless he was hard to get used to them. When Peter was in refugee camp, he only knew how to speak English and didn’t really prepare to get education. But Peter worked hard and got better. Peter was novel to them, because he was the only one who was a refugee in his school. Students didn’t really hang out with Peter. There was a girl who was loved by Peter and Peter prepared a doll and caught a bird to show that how much he loves her. However it would be strange to the girl, because Americans don’t catch a bird to show their love. Although Peter experienced different things in the USA, he solved.

Julius Caesar (+Ji Yeon)

Here's Decius Brutus; he shall tell them so.

Decius Caesar, all hail! Good morrow, worthy Caesar.
I come to fetch you to the Sneate House

Caesar Aned you are come in very happy thime
To bear my greeting to the senators
And tell them that I will not come today:
Cannot is false; and that I dare not, falser;
I will not come today. Tell them so, Decius

Calpurnia Say he is sick

Caesar Shall Caesar send a lie?
Have I in conquest stretch'd mine arm so far,
To be afeard to tell greybeards the truth?
Decius, go tell them Caesar wil not come.

Decius Most mighty Caesar, let me know some cause
Lest I be laugh'd ar when I tell them so.

Caesar The causee is in my will: I will not come;
That is enough to satisfy the Senate.
But for your private satisfaction,
Because I love you, I will let you know:
Calpurnia here, my wife, stays me at home.
She dreamt tonight she saw my statue,
Which like a fountain with an hundred spouts
Did run pure blood; and many lusty Romans
Came smiling, and did bathe their hands in it.
And these does she apply for warnings and portents
And evils imminent; and on her knee
Hath begg'd that I will stay at home today.

Decius This dream is all amiss interpreted;
It was a vision fair and fortunate:
Y our statue spouting blood in may pipes,
In which so many smiling Romans bath'd,
Signifies that from you great Rome shall suck
Reviving blood, and that great men shall press
For tinctures, stains, relics, and cognizance.
This by Calpurnia's dream is signified

Caesar And this way have you well expounded it.

Decius I have, when you have heard what I can say:
And know it now. The Senate have concluded
To give this day a crown to mighty Caesar.
If you shall send them word you will not come,
Their minds may change. Besides, it were a mock
Apt to be render'd, for some one to say,
'Break up the Senate till another time,
When Caesar's wife shall meet with better dreams.'
If Caesar hid himself, shall they not whisper
'Lo, Caesar is afraid'?
Pardon me, Caesar; for my dear dear love
To your procceding bids me tell you this,
And reason to my love is liable.

Caesar How foolish do your fears seem now, Calpurnia!
I am ashamed I did yield to them.
Give me my robe, for I will go.

Significance

This passage shows that Caesar doesnt't listen to his wife, Calpurnia and follows Deicus who is one of the conspirators. Therefore its significance is about Decius is clever and Caesar is going to be killed(foreshadowing). Decius said that the Caesar's blood makes Romans and Rome clean and healthy. How Decius tries to change Caesar's mind, gives that Decius is intelligent. Also Caesar is naive.
